Guide to Finding Work in Australia

When is it a good time to find a job in Australia?

You can find jobs throughout the year in Australia. However, due to holidays, there may be a slight slowdown in hiring activities during the Christmas and New Year period. Want to enjoy an Australian summer though? Make sure you have some savings and you can spend this time exploring our beautiful country and setting up.

Should I visit first?

Absolutely, if feasible, we recommend visiting Australia for a 2-4 week holiday before relocating. This will give you time to explore the country and potentially meet with future employers or recruitment agencies. Eitherway, network before you visit or relocate. Ask people who live in Australia what its like to live here. Research what state would suit your lifestyle and role requirements best! Network with potential employers, look up similar roles to your skillset and understand what companies hire this skillset.

Preparing your CV

We recommend that you tailor your CV or resume to suit the Australian job market. Australian employers typically expect a high level of detail and evidence of your achievements in your CV.

Your CV should include the following information:

  • Contact details

  • Visa status

  • Availability

  • Short summary of your work history and skills, and some indication of the roles you are interested in

  • Key skills

  • Detailed work history; company names & dates

  • Education

  • Indication that you have referees available

You'll need at least two references, covering your last five years of employment, so secure a few referees as soon as possible.

Interviewing

It is rare for employers to offer a job without first meeting you, unless there's a high demand for your unique skills. On average, you can expect to complete 2-3 interviews before a job offer is made. Online video interviews are also common, so it's essential to prepare for this format.

Australia Interviews are often:

  • Formal (appropriate formal clothing is required, even for online video interviews).

  • Conducted by a panel.

  • Competency based.

  • Based around situational questions. i.e., Tell me about a time when…

It is important that you have researched the company you are interviewing with, and make sure you highlight your relevant experience based on the job description, and employer’s needs.

If you accept a job offer, employers will generally expect you to be available to start work within 4-6 weeks, if not sooner.

It is really hard for Australian Employers, or Recruitment agencies to accomodate an 8 week notice periods that also requires time to relocate so make sure you have relocation plans already in place i.e. have already resigned and have a date you are moving. Except for rare, niche roles, there is lots of talent, available in 4 weeks already in Australia so make it easy for your potential employer to hire you over them!

Job Hunting Tips and Tricks

Before you start applying:

  • Ensure your CV is up-to-date and contains all the information that Australian employers might expect to see.

  • Keep a record of organisations you've applied to - It can get confusing when different people contact you about roles with similar titles, so make a note of any job reference.

  • Check your tech setup for video interviews.

Please note that this information is a general guide, and specific requirements may vary based on the industry and role you are applying for.

For specific advice tailored to your situation, consider consulting with a career or immigration advisor.
